About SFCA

Since 1984, nationally-recognized San Francisco Choral Artists has inspired and delighted audiences with innovative, eclectic programming and stunning performances. Specializing in new music and the works of living composers, we present both vibrant premieres and choral masterpieces of the last 600 years.

To fulfill our mission to living composers, including local SF Bay Area composers and young composers (under 30), in the last two seasons SFCA presented:

  • 21 world premiere works
  • 34 works by San Francisco Bay Area composers
  • 16 works by USA composers living outside the Bay Area
  • 6 works by composers under age 30

To fulfill our mission to inspire a love of choral music among young people, we engage with local high schools and colleges. In the past five years the Choral Artists have partnered with the SF School of the Arts, UC Berkeley New Music Project, SF Conservatory of Music, St. Mary’s College of California, and San Joaquin Office of Education Tenth Annual Fine Arts Day. And we touched over 1000 students as invited guests at the American Choral Directors Association convention in Anaheim, CA. Other musical partnerships have included performances with ensembles such as Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra, The Whole Noyse, Sonos, and Ateneo Chamber Singers of the Philippines.

This season, our 25th Anniversary and 15th season under Artistic Director Magen Solomon, we are delighted to welcome San Jose resident Brian Holmes as our 2010 Composer-In-Residence and Florida resident Christopher Marshall as our first Composer-Not-In-Residence. Both will compose a new work for each concert set. In addition to our self-produced concerts, we will appear as guest artists on the Composer’s Inc., Green Room Series, at Bay Area composer Herb Blelawa’s 80th Birthday Celebration, and at several other venues.

Every season our audiences look forward to vibrant world premiere performances, savoring their choral favorites, and experiencing enticing works not yet published or recorded. This season will be a special look forward -- at the future of choral music -- and back at great choral masterpieces. We will continue to foster new music, and introduce audiences to the joy of exquisite choral music, including new works from fine composers in the SF Bay Area and beyond.
